WE GOT A GAME 7!

WE GOT A GAME 7!

The Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors to force a Game 7!

The Cleveland Cavaliers forced a Game 7, becoming the third team to ever do so when being down 3-1. It was a great game, but many thought it was over after the first quarter, when it finished 31-11 in the Cavs’ favor. The Warriors offense was not flowing, and they were missing wide open shots. Harrison Barnes finished with 0 points, going 0 for 8 from the field. It was hard to watch him play, as he missed countless uncontested shots that we know he is capable of knocking down. Draymond Green did not have nearly the impact many thought he would have. He had 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists, but he did not look like someone who was just suspended and wanted to play better. He is usually a huge part of the Warriors’ offense, but in Game 6, he was not involved, taking only 7 shots. With Bogut out, many thought Ezeli needed to step up, but he was outplayed by Tristan Thompson many times, who had an unbelievable game, finishing with 15 points and 16 rebounds. He caught many lobs from LeBron and hyped up the crowd many times. Klay Thompson did have 25 points, but he did not shoot well, going 3 for 10 from three. He showed flashes of brilliance in the third quarter, going for 15 points, but he did not continue this in the fourth. Klay must play better in order for the Warriors to win Game 7.

Stephen Curry had an extremely interesting game. It began like Game 5, where he had a slow start. He finished the first quarter with only three points. In the second quarter, he got going, hitting 3 threes, and Golden State began to climb back into the game. Then, Curry began to get into foul trouble, but, in the third quarter, Steve Kerr elected to keep Curry in the game with four fouls. This proved to be a wise decision, as he did not pick up another foul until the fourth. With 4:42 left in the game, the lead was down to 11, and it was prime opportunity for Curry and the Warriors to come back. Curry went for a steal, but LeBron tripped over him, and this made the referee call a foul on Curry. He was now fouled out, and could not play anymore. Curry, who thought these calls were unfair, threw his mouthguard, accidentally hitting a fan. Warriors fans must hope that Curry is fired up after being ejected and leads them to a Game 7 victory.

The Cavaliers, on the other hand, were brilliant. LeBron James played like what he is: a four time MVP and a 2 time NBA Champion. He had another 41 point game, to go along with 11 assists and 8 rebounds. He also had three blocks. He was dominant on the floor, and led his team to a victory. Kyrie Irving also had a great game, adding 23 points.

There are many things to look forward to in Game 7. First, can Stephen Curry bounce back after his ejection? Second, will we see LeBron James continue his form, as he scored 41 points in the last two games? Can Draymond Green play better, after his miserable showing in Game 6? These are all questions that will be answered in Game 7.

One more game.

What Stood Out in Game 5

What Stood Out in Game 5

Kyrie and Lebron’s 41 points apiece – Kyrie Irving and LeBron James were both unstoppable. First, there was Irving. He had six assists to go along with his 41, and he shot an astounding 17 of 24 from the field, and 5 for 7 from beyond the arc. Golden State could not handle his and LeBron’s many jumpers and shots down the stretch. Irving had 18 first half points, and finished with 11 in the third and 12 in the fourth. He closed the game out for the Cavs, and he was exceptional on defense as well. It is not easy to hold the 2 time MVP Curry to 25 points, but Irving did. LeBron James also had an exceptional game. He had 41 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists while shooting 16 for 30 from the field and 4 for 8 from three-point range. Without Draymond in the paint to contest his shots, LeBron attacked the rim, having 25 first half points. He was great in the third, hitting 11 points and 4 of 5 from the field. LeBron also added 3 assists and 3 blocks. It was a great game for Irving and LeBron, as they became the first two teammates to score 40+ points in a Finals game.

How Draymond affected the game – Draymond Green was suspended for Game 5, after swiping at Lebron James’ groin in the last game. During Game 5, he was next door at the A’s game. His absence may have been one of the main reasons the Warriors lost this game. So how did he affect Game 5? Draymond runs both the Warriors’ offense and defense. He had the most passes per game in the whole NBA, so you can tell he gets the ball a lot. In Game 5, the offense was not flowing smoothly, and it is possible this was because Green was not there. On the defensive end, it was much worse. Steve Kerr, Warriors’ Head Coach, was seen many times telling his defense what to do, as this is usually Draymond’s job. His presence in the pain was gone, and Irving and LeBron found it much easier to attack the rim. We will see how Draymond Green’s return affects Game 6.

Klay’s big night – Game 5 was won by the Cavaliers, but this should not take away how great Klay Thompson was. He finished with 37 points, shooting 11-20 from the field, and 6-11 from three. These are outstanding numbers, and he made many threes in the second quarter, when he went completely berserk. The Cavs’ were caught many times trying to go under screens, leaving Klay to knock down threes. He is a great shooter, and the Cavs must be aware of this and try to make him shoot harder shots.

Curry’s big numbers yet average game – When looking at the box score, it may seem as though Curry had a great game. Many in the NBA would love to have 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. But it was still not a great night for him. He, along with his team, missed a huge amount of uncontested jumpers. Harrison Barnes had three wide open looks with no one in front of him, and he could not connect. Curry had a few threes where the defense just watched him shoot, and it did not fall. He finished 5 of 15 from three, and 8 for 21 from the field. The Warriors missed their final 14 threes. There should be little doubt that Stephen Curry will be better in Game 6.

The Cavs’ big problem – Bench scoring. Through the first four games, the Warriors nearly doubled the amount of bench points that the Cavs scored. People like Barbosa and Livingston have won games for the Warriors, but no one on the Cavs’ bench has. They must be able to help Irving and LeBron if they would like to force a Game 7 back in Oracle Arena.

Why the ball is still in the Warriors’ court – It is still a 3-2 lead for the Warriors. They have only lost two games in a row once all season. Although Bogut will not be playing, they can still play their “death” lineup. Draymond will be back, and his leadership on the offensive and defensive end could lead them to victory. Klay has been playing extremely well, and it is not unlike Curry to bounce back after an average game. Game 6 will be an extremely interesting matchup.

A Few Pressing Points after Game 3 of the 2016 NBA Finals

A Few Pressing Points after Game 3 of the 2016 NBA Finals

Kyrie and Lebron are back! – After a dismal Games 1 and 2, Irving and LeBron are finally back. In Game 3, Irving set the tone early, having 16 points in the first quarter, equaling the Warriors’ team total. He finished with 30 points on 12-25 from the field and 3-7 from three. Irving had a great game, giving nightmares to others guarding him. LeBron finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. This was, however, not the only good thing he did in Game 3; he took the team under his wing, and in the pregame huddle, he was recorded saying “Follow my lead!” This shows his leadership qualities, and it helped his team climb back into the series.

What is wrong with Curry? – Stephen Curry has not played like the two time NBA MVP that we know him to be. Through three games, he has only 48 points. This is the fewest points through three games of the Finals by a player who averaged 30 PPG in the regular season. In Game 3, he finished with a team-high 19 points, but in the first half, he ended with 2 points, having twice as many turnovers. He was 3-9 from three, and 6 for 13 from the field. He had an explosion in the third quarter, having 13 points in 5 minutes, but it was too little, too late for the Warriors. So what’s wrong? He is not injured, and he appears to just not be in the game, mentally. Even in Games 1 and 2, he missed threes that we know he can make, and again in Game 3, he seemed off. We saw a little bit of what he could do in the third quarter, but people are used to him doing that throughout the game. Stephen Curry just seems distracted and unfocused, and Warriors fans better hope that he can get back to his rhythm in Game 4.

What could the Warriors have done differently? – The Warriors were struggling to score and their shots were not falling. When the game was closer, around a 9 point lead, they could have played Barnes a bit more, as he was playing very well. He finished the game 7-11 from the field. I think that the Warriors could have drawn more plays up for Barnes, but instead they kept going back to Curry and Klay.

What did the Cavs do differently? – The Cavs showed more fight in them. All the 50-50 balls went to them, and you could see them at many times diving on the floor to secure a loose ball. They showed more effort, and they were making their shots. JR Smith only made three shots in Games 1 and 2, but he made 5 three-pointers in Game 3.

Should the Cavs start Kevin Love in Game 4? – This is Tyronn Lue’s decision. The best choice would to make Kevin Love come off the bench. The Cavs have momentum, so why disrupt that? The Cavaliers’ defense was much better in Game 3, and many say this was because LeBron was played at the power forward spot, leaving him on Draymond. This resulted in Draymond having an off-night, and it cannot be a coincidence that Draymond plays well when being guarded by Love but not by LeBron. Richard Jefferson, who started Game 3 in place of Love, played extremely well, and even though he only had 9 points and 8 rebounds, he provided a spark to the Cavs that Love was not giving. Love should not start Game 4, and if the Cavs need some scoring, he can provide some valuable minutes.

These are a few questions and points I found myself thinking about after Game 3. Game 4 will be extremely interesting, as we will get to see if the MVP Curry shows up, if Lue decides to play Love, and what form of Kyrie and LeBron we will see.

How Each Warriors Player has Impacted the 2016 NBA Finals

How Each Warriors Player has Impacted the 2016 NBA Finals

The Golden State Warriors are up 2-0 on the Cavaliers in the 2016 NBA Finals, and each player has played a huge part in each win. Let’s see how each player contributed to these two Warrior wins.

Andrew Bogut: He has had a great series so far. In Game 1, he had 10 points, unusually high, as he does not score much every game. In Game 2, he set the tone early, having 4 blocks, and ending the game with 5.

Draymond Green: Draymond, who seems to be the frontrunner for Finals MVP so far, has had one of the best series in his career. In Game 1, he had 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists. Then, In Game 2, he had a team-high 28 points, practically winning the game for the Warriors.

Harrison Barnes: Barnes played a huge part in Game 1, having 7 points early in the game. He ended with 13, and in Game 2, he only had 5 points, but added 5 rebounds to the Warriors rebound total.

Klay Thompson: In Game 1, Klay only had 9 points, 4 for 12 from the field. This was not a great game for him, as he is used to having 20+. He still provided the dagger in Game 1, ending any chances of a comeback for the Cavs. In Game 2, he had 17 points, and shot 50% from three. Although he has not had the best scoring games, he has played great defense on Kyrie Irving, who has been struggling in this series due to the great defense of Klay. Kyrie Irving has been trying to go to Isolation plays, but Klay’s quickness and height prevent Irving scoring, who is 4 for 27 from iso plays in the Finals.

Stephen Curry: In Game 1, Curry only had 11 points, but still ended the game with a dagger stepback three. In Game 2, Curry got in foul trouble throughout the game, but still ended with 18 points. Many expected Curry to be Finals MVP, but if he wants those honors, he must play much better than he did in Game 1 and Game 2.

Andre Iguodala: Iguodala has played fantastic defense on LeBron James, as well as helping on the offensive end. In Game 1, he had 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, a fantastic all around game. In Game 2, he worked more on the defensive end, holding LeBron to 19 points, and adding 7 to his own team’s score.

Festus Ezeli: Off the bench, Ezeli has been the energy spark. He played ten minutes each game, and had 2 points in Game 1 and 6 points in Game 2. In Game 2, he began the big Warriors run that led to a 15 point lead with a putback dunk. This got the Warriors energized and got them playing much better.

Shaun Livingston: Livingston won the Warriors Game 1, as he scored a team-high 20 points. His mid-range shot was unguardable from the Cavaliers, as Livingston used his height to get over his shorter opponents. This was crucial, as Curry and Klay were both having off-nights. In Game 2, he did not have near the impact he had in Game 1, as he only had seven points in 24 minutes.

Leandro Barbosa: In Game 1, Barbosa did not miss a shot, as he went 5 for 5, with 11 points. He continued this streak in Game 2, hitting his first five shots, finishing with ten points. Barbosa has been great this series, as the Cavs are so focused on getting the ball out of Curry and Klay’s hands, they tend to leave players like Barbosa wide open.

Ian Clark: In Game 1, Clark played two minutes but did not score. In Game 2, when the game was out of hand for the Cavs, he put it 7 minutes, adding 7 points to the Warriors’ big win.

“Mo” Speights: Speights only had 3 points in his two minutes of playing time, but if the Warriors are in need of a great jumpshooter and a decent defender, he is available.

Brandon Rush: Rush has not been featured in this series a lot. He is still yet to score a point, but has only played 8 minutes.

Anderson Varejao: Varejao did not play in Game 2. He has not had a big impact in this series so far, as in Game 1, he did not score in his 3 minutes of playing time.
